How many children do you have?  I have 3 children. Two sons, and a daughter sandwiched neatly in the middle. Andrew, my oldest child, is 32, and he met his wife at university and they are the parents of Missy. Diana is 29 and she lives in New Zealand, where she works for a church. David, my youngest, will be 21 soon, and he is at university at the moment.

How many grandchildren? What are their ages? Just the one – my little granddaughter, Missy who has just turned one. She is an absolute delight, and the source of so much joy in our family.

Any great grandchildren? No. That will be a looooong way in the future!

What do your grandchildren call you? Well, Missy is not saying much yet, apart from dadadadada and mamamamama, but I will be Moregranny. My daughter-in-law’s Mum is Granny, you see, and I had a Moregranny when I was a child, and love the name. When I was 2, my paternal grandmother moved to the city where we lived, and my mother explained that I had another Granny, and as a toddler, I apparently looked at her and said “More Granny?” And the name stuck. Everyone called her Moregranny till the day she died, and she had a special place in my heart, so being Moregranny will be delightful. Missy, on the other hand, may call me whatever she comes up with!

How often do you get to see your grandchildren? Not as often as I would like. They live about 2 hours away from where I live at the moment, but when I visit, it is for a day or 2, and when they come here, it is usually for a weekend. Thank heavens for Skype!

What is the best thing about being a grandma? Seeing that little face beam at me. Well, we are working on that. I am still a relative stranger, but she does recognize me on the computer! Seeing my son develop into an amazing father. It seems just yesterday that he was born……

What is the most challenging part of being a grandma? At the moment, given our circumstances, it is building a relationship with Missy. Not seeing her often is a real problem for me. I know that as she gets older, and remembers more, we will become so much closer. I can’t wait to be able to spend more time with her, and have adventures together. To read to her, and get to know her as she grows up.

Describe a recent time that one (or more) of your grandchildren made you laugh out loud. When we skyped recently, she was playing with her teapot, and she brought me (on the TV screen) a cup of tea, which her Mum “fed “ to me. Hysterically funny. I have visions of Missy trying to feed real liquid to the TV in the future. Her Dad would not be thrilled!

What is your favorite thing to do with grandchildren who visit your house? To get down to her level and play with her. To read to her, and watch her trying new things. I will never tire of watching her play, sleep, learn…. I am a besotted grandmother!

What is your favorite thing to do when visiting grandchildren at their house? She is into everything, and she shrieks with delight. Now that she is walking, she is off and about and changing so fast. Because she is so little, it is more watching her and marveling at the changes – so rapid when they are only one. We play with her toys, of course. I am partial to the farm. And the princess carriage. And the little people. And her phone. And her little house. And the teaset……. I can’t WAIT till she has a little kitchen. Sigh. Maybe I am entering my second childhood here!

How do you maintain the bond between yourself and your grandchildren between visits? Skype. A wonderful thing.

What do you most want to pass along to your grandchildren? A sense that the world is full of exciting options, and that there is always something to be learned and experienced. To learn to laugh, and love and live life to the full, without fear. And to be kind, both to herself and to others.

What is one word you hope your grandkids think of when they think of you? One day – maybe, love. Or acceptance. Delight. Fun. I want her to always know that she is loved, and cherished, no matter what happens.
